Alyssa Galvan WMST Mon. 2:30- 5:30 12/3/18 Blog 3 Ever since I could remember, religion has been a very important aspect to my family. I do not remember a time where my family and I did not spend our time at church on Sunday. I remember learning about my religion from my mother and teachers at the church who would hold classes for children. As I grew older and was more able to understand what was being said in church, I realized that this was something I wanted to continue following and believing in. I can definitely say that religion is something that has changed for me from since I was little to my young adulthood age. Now that I am older, I am able to interpret things the way I see them and the way I believe in them. I do not see Catholicism as believing the readings for what they say, I see Catholicism as the way one interprets it. Religion has immensely impacted my life for the greater good. Alyssa Galvan 10/28/18 Blog 2 Prompt 1:  The cultural artifact I chose was the music video for the song  Do It Like a Dude  by Jessie J. I chose this to be my cultural artifact because it clearly shows and challenges gender representation. When I was younger, I was on a hip hop team and was so excited to start dancing this style of dance. My instructor had created a dance to this song and I fell in love with this routine. I fell in love with the way it made me feel. It made me feel powerful and risky. The routine had us doing moves that matched her lyrics such as, “grab my crotch” and “wear my hat low like you”. In doing these moves, I felt like I was challenging the common gender representations I grew up seeing and learning, which made me feel in control of myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOf3kYtwASo Prompt 2:  In creating this song, the intended audience was females. Jessie J. wanted to show women that “we can do it like a man” whatever it...

There is an excerpt in the middle of the song read by a Nigerian author named Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This author is known as the most prominent acclaimed Anglophone author in which the excerpt was taken from a speech she did. The lyrics talk about what society expects and assumes about women. The lyrics mention what a female should typically be taught growing up.  https://genius.com/2548189 Prompt 2:  The excerpt talks about what society teaches females on how to behave, act, what to do, what not to do, and what they are expected of. It says that we teach girls to make themselves smaller, to have ambition and success but not as much as a man has. That women are expected to make life choices that revolve around marriage because it is the most important thing to achieve as a female. She then questions why we teac...
